Pismo Beach to host world’s largest para surfing competition. ‘We are so stoked’

For the first time in the competition’s history, the world’s largest international para surfing competition will be held outside of the Southern California — right here on the Central Coast.

The 2021 International Surfing Association World Para Surfing Championship is scheduled to be held in Pismo Beach on Dec. 5 through 11.

The championships will bring together more than 300 surfers, coaches, trainers and support staff from countries around the world, to “showcase their talents in a Paralympic-style, world championship competition,” according to the event’s website.

Para surfing, also known as adaptive surfing, allows individuals with physical disabilities to surf.

The ISA has hosted its championship since 2015, and boasts that the competition is the largest adaptive surfing world championship in the world.

“We are so stoked to have these future Paralympians here in our amazing beach community and to have our community be so involved,” AmpSurf wrote in a news release announcing the event.

AmpSurf, which supports people with disabilities through adaptive surfing and other outdoor activities, is the official host of the championship this year.

This will be the first time the event is held outside the San Diego area, according to the AmpSurf release.

“We are excited to welcome the world to Pismo Beach and be the title sponsor of the Pismo Beach World Para-Surfing Championship hosted by AmpSurf,” Pismo Beach Mayor Ed Waage said in the release. “Being a part of this event is yet another reason why we are ‘Classic California.’ ”

According to AmpSurf, the event will feature a Learn-to-Surf clinic for those just starting out as well as a symposium on Dec. 5, opening ceremonies on Dec. 6 and the competition between Dec. 7 and 11.

Throughout the week, people can also visit the event’s Surf and Sports Therapy Village, where organizations and companies will showcase their programs, according to the release.
