Did you spot a huge plume of smoke near Avila Beach? Here’s why

A controlled burn produced a plume of smoke over Avila Beach on Friday.

Cal Fire firefighters were supervising the burn near the Point San Luis Light Station, according to a news release from San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District (APCD).

The controlled burn started around 9:45 a.m. and was scheduled to stop by about 6 p.m., according to a tweet from Cal Fire.

The smoke could be seen as far away as San Luis Obispo.

The APCD, PG&E and Cal Fire worked together to mitigate the risk of smoke exposure to the community, according to the release.

Controlled burns like the one in Avila Beach are intended to reduce fire risk, Cal Fire said via Twitter.
