It’s Pioneer Day in Paso Robles: That means free beans for all!
Paso Robles celebrated its 91st annual Pioneer Day on Saturday with a full slate of festivities capped by the event’s signature bean feed event at noon at the Downtown City Park.
Residents lined up with pots and pans of all shapes and sizes to be filled with beans that had been cooking in huge pots since 7 a.m. that morning.
David Kudija, who manages the bean feed, said crowds were a bit smaller than expected this year while organizers had actually planned for larger numbers, so they were left with extras.
The parade was canceled and other usual festivities curtailed in 2020 due to the pandemic, and they returned fully this year.
The event also featured the Pioneer Day Parade around downtown as well as a variety of other fun activities, including whiskerino and horseshow-pitching contests, a children’s pet show/little cowboy/cowgirl and pioneer boy/girl contest, and displays of antique equipment, tractors and wagons at the Pioneer Museum.
