California Valley fire nearly doubles in size, continues to threaten structures

A vegetation fire that broke out in California Valley had grown to about 1,550 acres as of 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to Cal Fire.

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. near Soda Lake Road and Highway 58 and quickly spread, leading to a closure on Highway 58, Cal Fire said via Twitter.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office was conducting evacuations on Tuesday for Belmont Trail from Soda Lake Road to Branch Mountain Road, the Sheriff’s Office tweeted.

According to the California Highway Patrol logs, the fire was headed in a southwesternly direction away from the highway.

An evacuation center has been set up at California Valley Recreation Center.
