Vegetation fire near Avila Beach leads to evacuations, road closures, Cal Fire says
A five-acre vegetation fire near Avila Beach that sparked around noon Wednesday, leading to evacuations and road closures.
The fire started near Meadowbrook Lane and See Canyon Road, Cal Fire said. As of 2:30 p.m. the fire has reached up to five acres and is 50% contained, according to the agency.
Firefighters requested a hard road closure near the fire. San Luis Bay Drive and See Canyon Road were expected to be closed until 3 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol logs.
Cal Fire said that no structures were immediately threatened. However homes near Meadowbrook Lane were evacuated, according to scanner traffic.
According to Cal Fire, when the fire broke out, flames were spreading at a rapid rate and there was a potential for the fire to reach up to 200 acres.
Forward progress stopped by around 2 p.m., according to scanner traffic.
Smoke from the blaze was still visible early Wednesday afternoon. However, flames could no longer be seen on the extremely steep hillside where the fire was burning.
Five Cities Fire, California Men’s Colony inmates and Santa Maria Fire were also on the scene of the fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
