SLO development could bring 280 homes to city’s south end

A 280-home, mixed-use development project is moving forward in the planning stages in San Luis Obispo.

The proposed project at Tank Farm Road and Santa Fe Road calls for 15,000 square feet of commercial space as well as three different housing types: 140 townhomes, 100 stacked flat units and 40 studio and one-bedroom units over the commercial structures.

The townhome and stacked flat units are intended as ownership units, while the mixed-use units will likely be for rent, San Luis Obispo officials said in a news release.

The proposed mixed-use project on two parcels is located on about 11 acres of property at 600 Tank Farm Road, near Broad Street.

After reviewing the proposal on Tuesday night, the San Luis Obispo City Council authorized the next steps for preparation of an environmental impact report.

The council directed city staff to seek a development agreement as part of the project to address transportation infrastructure, including a new roundabout at the intersection of Tank Farm Road and Santa Fe Road.

In addition, as project planning moves forward, the council wants to see bicycle infrastructure in the vicinity of the project.

“Construction activity, including housing production, is presently allowed under the state and local shelter at home orders,” San Luis Obispo officials said in a news release. “The city has recently implemented additional services to support construction and housing activity, including an online portal to submit applications for permits and payment.”

Citywide, realtors have been holding virtual tours of new homes and scheduling limited in-person showings, using social distancing practices to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
