Lucia Mar becomes second SLO County district to cancel in-person classes for the year

Lucia Mar school officials announced Wednesday that campuses will remain closed for the rest of this academic year, and in-person classes will likely be canceled through the summer.

The South County district’s board of education on Tuesday directed officials to cancel in-person instruction through early June, “given the complex nature of maintaining social distancing requirements in the school setting,” Superintendent Andy Stenson said in an email.

“We have maintained hope that school could resume in normal fashion in May or June,” Stenson wrote. “However, the ability to safely conduct key aspects of schooling-transporting on buses, seating arrangements in classrooms, cafeteria service for breakfast and lunch, etc., cannot be accomplished safely under current social distancing guidelines.

Lucia Mar is the second district in San Luis Obispo County to cancel in-person classes for the year. San Luis Coastal Unified School District opted to close campuses for the remainder of the year on April 14.

Lucia Mar board members also directed staff to prepare to conduct summer school classes virtually. District leaders are making alternate plans for end-of-the-year activities, including graduation.

Food service will continue Monday through Friday at designated locations.

“These are challenging times for all,” Stenson wrote. “As a school district, we are committed to ending the year strong through distance learning, and are making preparations to meet the challenges ahead if our current health crisis lingers into the late summer/fall of 2020.”
