Teen injured in 70-foot drop from balcony into ocean in Isla Vista

An 18-year-old was injured early Friday morning when he fell from an Isla Vista balcony into the Pacific Ocean.

Santa Barbara County Fire spokesman Daniel Bertucelli tweeted shortly after midnight that the department was on scene for a reported balcony fall.

According to Bertucelli, the teen fell 70 feet from the balcony overlooking the ocean into the water below.

Medics on scene treated the teen and he was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The extent of his injuries was not disclosed.

Numerous people — usually young and college-age — have fallen from area balconies overlooking the ocean over the years.

In 2018, a 20-year-old college student was injured after falling from an Isla Vista balcony.

Two more fell in 2017 — one during annual spring break party Deltopia, and another in February of that year. The latter, a 22-year-old UC Santa Barbara graduate, died from his injuries.
