Police arrest suspect who allegedly shot Atascadero man in the stomach, then fled

Atascadero police on Monday arrested a suspect accused of shooting a man in the stomach during the weekend.

Derrick Lee Green, 36, was taken into custody at noon on suspicion of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to an Atascadero Police Department news release.

Green was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he’s being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. He remained in custody as of Monday evening, according to jail records.

Atascadero police are searching for a suspect in a Sunday shooting that left one person injured.

Police and fire services personnel responded about 5:50 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the 8800 block of Old Santa Rosa Road, according to an Atascadero Police Department news release.

Emergency responders found a man had been shot in the stomach at close range, and the suspect had fled the scene.

The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown, but he is expected to survive his injuries, the release says.

Atascadero police and investigators from the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office began conducting a follow-up investigation, which showed the shooting may have been accidental, the release says.

Police investigators are continuing to look into the incident, and no further information is being released at this time.
