SLO police identify man found dead in Prefumo Creek — foul play is not suspected

The San Luis Obispo Police Department said Monday it has identified the man found dead in Prefumo Creek on Sunday and that his death is not being treated as a homicide.

The man, who police say was middle-aged, was found deceased by a local resident in the area near the western boundary of the city Sunday morning, Capt. Jeff Smith said Monday afternoon.

The body, which was half-naked, was discovered in the creek bed near Vista Del Lago and Laguna Lane, police initially said.

As of late Monday afternoon, the department had identified the man but was withholding his name because it had not received word from the Sheriff’s-Coroner’s Office that next of kin have been notified.

“At this time we do not know the cause of death but do not believe foul play was involved,” Smith wrote in an email.

The Coroner’s Office has an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla said Monday.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing.
