SLO County Veterans Day events and closures
A number of events will be held in San Luis Obispo County to celebrate Veterans Day. Events are Friday unless otherwise noted:
ATASCADERO
▪ Faces of Freedom Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial, Atascadero Lake Park on westbound Highway 41. This year’s event will recognize distinguished veterans and include speaker George Marrett and a historic military flyover performed by the Estrella Warbirds. A tri-tip sandwich barbecue, sponsored by the Atascadero Kiwanis Club, will follow the event. Arrive early for parking and seating. 805-423-5482.
CAMBRIA
▪ Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. Vets Hall, 1000 Main St. Guest speaker Les Lindow. Barbecue after the service. 805-927-1876.
LOS OSOS
▪ Los Osos Valley Mortuary and Memorial Park Veterans Day Program. 10:30 a.m. 2260 Los Osos Valley Road. Ceremony includes guest speaker Pete Pepper. The Kiwanis foundation serves a free lunch after the ceremony. 805-528-1500.
PASO ROBLES
▪ Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. Paso Robles District Cemetery, 45 Nacimiento Lake Drive. Ceremony includes guest speaker, patriotic songs and flyover. Snacks and a hot dog lunch. 805-238-4544.
PISMO BEACH
▪ Veterans Day Celebration on the Pismo Beach Pier. 11 a.m. Join the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce to honor all who served. 805-773-4382.
SAN LUIS OBISPO
▪ The Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum and American Legion Post 66 will host an open house and military/classic car show. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at San Luis Obispo Veterans Memorial Building, 801 Grand Ave. Tours of the museum, lunch at the “Legion Post,” a military warbirds flyover at 11 a.m., Grizzly Youth Academy Honor Guard, vendors and displays, screenings of veterans’ interviews and more. 805-543-1763.
▪ The San Luis Obispo Downtown Association is holding the eighth annual Veterans Celebration at Downtown SLO Farmers Market on Thursday to honor and pay tribute to local veterans. Event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a ceremonial procession through the market led by the Cal Poly ROTC honor guard, followed by the Grizzly Youth Academy drill team, Central Coast Pipes & Drums and other participating veterans. The procession will lead to Chorro Street where the ceremony will be held, featuring Mixed CO vocal ensemble, Grizzly Youth Academy drill team performance and guest speakers. Event also includes musical performances, displays and booths comprised of service organizations that support local veterans. 805-541-0286, ext. 13.
CLOSURES
The following services will be affected Friday by Veterans Day:
▪ Libraries and federal, state, county, city and community services district offices will be closed.
▪ Post offices are closed, with no delivery except express mail.
▪ No school for kindergarten through 12th grade.
▪ Cuesta College and Cal Poly are closed, but the Cal Poly Kennedy Library is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
▪ Stock markets are open. Bank closures vary.
▪ Trash pickup will continue with regular schedules.
▪ The Tribune offices will be open.
