Coronavirus updates: CMC inmates test positive for COVID-19; Santa Barbara County deaths
San Luis Obispo County added 24 cases Tuesday, not including California Men’s Colony inmate cases.
The state prison in San Luis Obispo is experiencing another coronavirus outbreak that has impacted 77 inmates.
Teenagers in Cambria are raising funds for people who have taken a financial hit due to COVID-19.

California Men’s Colony coronavirus outbreak spreads to 34 more inmates
The California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo reported that an additional 34 inmates have tested positive for coronavirus as of Wednesday morning.
Since July 30, 77 inmates and seven employees at the state prison have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
According to the CDCR, 422 of the 3,468 incarcerated people at the prison have been tested for coronavirus in the last 14 days.
SLO County teens raise money to help families affected by COVID-19
A group of Cambria teens is working to help those struggling financially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The high school students are following their passion for helping — one act of charity and kindness at a time — while following in the steps of their spiritual exemplar, the late Italian social activist Pier Giorgio Frassati.
The Frassati Group at Cambria’s Santa Rosa Catholic Church raised tens of thousands of dollars to help others and provide additional religious training for group members.
Pond Fire worker at base camp tests positive for COVID-19
One of the kitchen crew members assigned to the 1,962-acre Pond Fire base camp in Santa Margarita tested positive for COVID-19, according to a Cal Fire news release.
According to the release, the employee’s module has been quarantined out of precaution.
Cal Fire said it believes the virus will likely not spread among other crew members because of the precautions taken at basecamps this fire season to avoid a coronavirus outbreak.
Cal Fire said it is working closely with the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department and will continue to monitor kitchen workers until the fire is 100% contained.
3 more coronavirus deaths reported in Santa Barbara County
The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has been notified that the positive rate of COVID-19 cases statewide and in the county has been inaccurate during the past 10 days, Noozhawk reported.
The underreporting of cases is because of technological issues with the electronic laboratory system, according to Ansorg. This has also affected San Luis Obispo County, according to ReadySLO.org.
Santa Barbara County reported three new deaths Tuesday, bringing the local total to 64. All three people were older than age 70, and two had underlying health conditions. The individuals resided in the unincorporated North County area, Lompoc and Santa Maria.
There were 62 new positive cases reported Tuesday, bringing the county total to 6,526 positive cases; 6,235 individuals have recovered, leaving 227 active cases in the county.
As of Tuesday, 88 patients with COVID-19 were being treated in local hospitals, with 25 of them in intensive care units.
Of the new cases reported Tuesday, 13 were in Santa Maria.
SLO County group helps undocumented immigrants affected by COVID-19
Immigrants in San Luis Obispo County have been among the hardest hit by coronavirus and the economic turmoil that it’s caused, according to a group of community leaders that’s formed a financial relief program.
SLO County UndocuSupport was formed in April by a network of local nonprofit organizations, churches, public sector leaders and community volunteers.
The program has collected about $150,000 so far through various philanthropic grants and donations to distribute $300 to $500 per undocumented person and up to $599 per family.
As of Monday, the program has allocated a total of $58,361 to undocumented individuals and families.
