Update: Monterey County issues new evacuation order as Dolan Fire continues to spread

Update 1:50 p.m.: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department issued a notice around 1 p.m. saying that due to fire activity and a wind shift, a mandatory evacuation order has been placed for the following area: south of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, west of South Coast Ridge to Prewitt Ridge including Alms Ridge.

Original story: The Dolan Fire near Big Sur is now at more than 29,000 acres and 25% containment, according to a news release issued Monday from the U.S. Forest Service.

The fire, which is believed to have been started on Aug. 18 by arson near Limekiln State Park, was helped by a marine layer that tamped down the fire activity.

More than 1,000 firefighters are combating the blaze in the Los Padres National Forest.

Crews conducted a “tactical firing option along the north section, to reinforce the containment line along the McWay drainage,” officials said in a news release.

“Firefighters cleared vegetation and other fuels around infrastructure in the Partington area,” the agency wrote.

Highway 1 remains closed in the area.

Smoke conditions remain much improved from earlier, with good to moderate air quality predicted, officials noted.
