Going on spring break? 3 California cities ranked among ‘wildest’ pit stops
Although some students have already gone on spring break, others are taking a break from the books.
California is home to three of the “wildest” pit stops for travelers headed to popular spring break destinations, according to a new study by American River Wellness.
The Sacramento addiction treatment center said it surveyed more than 3,000 college students to find the “college towns, casino strips and nightlife hubs that serve as unofficial launchpads” for spring break partying.
American River Wellness said students are seeking road trip stops that give “a burst of energy, a memorable night and the sense that the vacation has properly started.”
Here’s where the California towns ranked, and why:
What is the best party pit stop in California?
San Luis Obispo was the highest ranking California city on American River Wellness’ list of the best party pit stops, landing at No. 10.
“SLO might be the most charming pit stop on the California coast for anyone headed to San Diego,” the company said in a news release. “Cal Poly students keep Higuera Street lively, but there’s a laid-back Central Coast energy that makes even a random weeknight feel like vacation.”
The Central Coast city offers multiple nature trails and hiking opportunities during the day, American River Wellness said, and Pismo Beach and Avila Beach are only a drive away.
At night, pubs, dive bars and cocktail lounges add to the diverse options for students.
School review website Niche ranked Cal Poly among the top 10 party schools in California in 2026.
What are other road trip destinations in California?
Two other California cities made American River Wellness’ list of the nation’s most memorable spring break stops.
Chico, which ranked at No. 57, is home to another top-ranked California party school: California State University, Chico. It’s about a hour and a half north of Sacramento by car.
Santa Barbara landed lower down the list, at No. 126.
The Central Coast city is home to the No. 1 party school in California, according to Niche. Many students live in Isla Vista, taking advantage of bars only blocks away from the beach.
In downtown Santa Barbara, State Street spans multiple blocks with plenty of bars. The city is also home to California’s oldest pier, Stearns Wharf, which offers restaurants, wine tasting and more.
Where are the 10 most popular stops for spring break?
American River Wellness said that most of its top party towns have “recognizable nightlife districts with strong student energy and very little friction.”
College towns also consistently ranked higher on the list.
“When a town is already culturally coded as young, social and slightly chaotic, it becomes much easier for students to picture it as part of the trip,” the company said.
According to American River Wellness, these were the top 10 spring break pit stops in the nation in 2026:
- Nashville, Tennessee
- Athens, Georgia
- Tempe, Arizona
- Madison, Wisconsin
- Tallahassee, Florida
- Atlantic City, New Jersey
- State College, Pennsylvania
- Bloomington, Indiana
- Atlanta
- San Luis Obispo
How did American River Wellness come up with its ranking?
In March, American River Wellness surveyed 3,007 students traveling for spring break about the best pit stop party locations on route to their destinations.
The company also surveyed 250 truck drivers to understand traffic patterns that align with spring break for college students.
American River Wellness said it analyzed survey results to “highlight the locations most frequently identified as memorable or popular stopover party spots before reaching the final beach destination.”
