Historic ‘treehouse-like’ estate hidden in Hollywood Hills is for sale. Look inside
A home that was designed by one of Southern California’s most prolific architects of modernism has landed on the real estate market in Los Angeles.
The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is tucked away in the famous rolling hills that overlook the city and is now listed for $1.85 million. While the location is coveted, it’s not what makes it so special.
“This first ever commissioned home by iconic architect A. Quincy Jones offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to live in a piece of Hollywood architectural history,” the listing on The Agency says.
“The property is a true expression of mid-century modernism and stands as a key example of early modernist design uniquely built to incorporate the landscape and create a treehouse-like feel. The home backs up to a protected wildlife sanctuary, offering sweeping greenbelt views from every room, providing a peaceful retreat from the bustling energy of Los Angeles.”
Jones was known for combining different elements to create “a sense of openness and lightness” in his work, the listing notes. He is credited in the completion of more than 5,000 projects, Dwell reports — so it’s extremely rare to see the first residential home that he was commissioned to build be on the market.
“As the first major work of Jones’ career, this home played a pivotal role in the evolution of mid-century modern architecture in Los Angeles, paving the way for future designs that would define the city’s architectural identity,” the listing says.
Features of the 1,400-square-foot home include:
Sliding glass doors
Vaulted ceilings
Two fireplaces
Basement
Private outdoor area
“Located in the cultural hub of Laurel Canyon, famous for attracting musicians, artists, and counterculture figures since the 1960s and 70s,” the listing says. “Iconic artists like Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Frank Zappa lived and collaborated there, shaping the sound of rock and folk music.”
The listing is held by Gina Michelle and George Ouzounian of The Agency.
