Tractor runs over and kills woman lying on California beach, police say

A tractor rolled over a woman lying on the sand Monday morning on a California beach, killing her, police say.

The death took place shortly after 10 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Pacific Street, near Oceanside’s South Harbor, KGTV reported. Oceanside lies north of San Diego.

“It’s a very tragic accident,” said Lt. Tom Bussey of the Oceanside Police Department, KNSD reported.

Tractors and other heavy equipment were on the beach as part of a dredging project at the nearby harbor, KFMB reported.

The tractor backed over the woman, who was lying fully clothed on the sand, while moving pipes into a storage area to be hauled away, KNSD reported. Passersby had earlier stopped to check on the woman, who appeared to be asleep.

On Wednesday, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Carol Aguirre. 68, who was described as homeless, KGTV reported.
