Universal Studios just got more expensive — weeks after Disney’s price hike

Disneyland isn’t the only Southern California theme park pinching wallets. Over the past weekend, Universal Studios Hollywood raised its daily ticket price from $120 to $129, the Los Angeles Times reports.

That comes to a more than 7 percent increase in ticket prices, according to KTLA. The park previously hiked ticket prices by $5 last year, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Prices for annual passes at Universal rose by about $10 this year, as well, the Los Angeles Times reported. KTLA noted that the price increase, while following Disney’s price hike by a few weeks, comes just months before Universal Studios Hollywood opens a new attraction based on “Kung Fu Panda,” the 2008 DreamWorks movie.

On the other side of the country, Universal Orlando Resort raised its daily ticket price from $110 to $115, the Orlando Sentinel reported Feb. 16. Disney raised prices at both Disneyland and Disney World on Feb. 11.

Both Disney and Universal have adopted a tiered pricing structure for their theme parks in an attempt to reduce crowds on popular days, meaning that prices can vary depending on the demand for that day.

Audrey Eig, a spokeswoman for Universal Studios Hollywood, told the Los Angeles Times that the ticket pricing “is competitive and reflective of our exciting entertainment options.”

If you’re looking to save some cash, daily tickets are $10 to $20 off for anyone who books online, and California residents can save up to $30 by buying tickets online.
