Man seriously injured in shark attack off Monterey County coast
Stillwater Cove in Pebble Beach was evacuated Friday after a shark attacked a man who was spearfishing in the area, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Two off-duty sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg to help stop “his massive blood loss.”
A post on the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page said the man was transported from the scene by AMR to a local trauma center.
The Associated Press reported later Friday that a man and his father were several hundred yards offshore when the son was bitten by a shark in the right thigh.
Cal Fire Capt. Josh Silveira told the AP that the man’s leg was intact but the bite was serious.
An air unit conducted a search of the area and spotted a “large aquatic animal,” which may have been the shark, off Pescadero Point. Cal Fire also responded to the scene and helped evacuate Stillwater Cove.
Back in May, a kayaker was attacked by a great white shark in Monterey Bay — and the entire ordeal was captured on video.
