  • Bluemercury closed its downtown San Luis Obispo store after six years.
  • Macy’s said Bluemercury had its 19th consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth.
  • Jewelry brand Gorjana leased the storefront, targeting spring 2026 opening.

After roughly six years in the downtown core, cosmetics company Bluemercury has shut up shop in San Luis Obispo — but the space won’t be vacant for long.

The spa and beauty store, which opened in the former Bali’s Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt spot at 949 Higuera St. in 2019, closed abruptly this week, with no information as to why the business was shuttering now.

“This store is permanently closed,” a sign on the window of the corner business said. “Thank you for your years of patronage!”

Former customers were urged to visit the company’s website at bluemercury.com for continued access to its products.

Bluemercury’s closure comes as something of a surprise as parent company Macy’s Inc. has recently claimed the brand as a whole was performing well.

In an open letter to stakeholders Jan. 8, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said the spa and beauty brand had delivered its 19th consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth, citing it as an example of the company’s “sustained strength in luxury.”

New jewelry store opening first SLO County spot

The business won’t be vacant for long.

No sooner had the business closed and cleared out the space, however, before a “leased sign” was already in the window of the empty storefront. Then on Friday, wraps went up announcing the new tenant: Gorjana.

According to its website, the Laguna Beach-based jewelry business was founded by Gorjana and Jason Reidel in 2004.

The pair opened their first retail storefront in Laguna Beach in 2016 and have spent the past decade growing the business across the country.

The San Luis Obispo location will be the business’s first location in San Luis Obispo County. Currently, the nearest Gorjana is in Santa Barbara.

The company has not announced a firm opening date, but signs on the window Tuesday said it was planned for spring 2026.
