Whether it’s great prices, a location near you or even an item you just can’t find anywhere else, we all have a go-to grocery store.

But have you ever wondered how many other people share your same opinion on which is the best?

San Luis Obispo city-specific data from SafeGraph shows that one grocery store stands head and shoulders above the rest when it come to monthly foot traffic: Costco.

SafeGraph collects anonymized location data from mobile devices for analysis of retail trends. Because not every visitor carries a mobile device to every location, and not every mobile device provides location data to SafeGraph, the data provided is a sample set and lower than the actual foot traffic.

According to the data, the members-only warehouse store — known to most for its bulk goods and to others for its signature $1.50 hot dog combo — had the highest monthly foot traffic of any grocery store in the city of San Luis Obispo, with an average of 32,854 monthly visitors in 2022.

Comparatively, the next highest-trafficked store was Vons, with approximately 2,100-plus visitors each month.

Grocery Outlet, Ralphs, Smart & Final, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, Lassens Natural Foods and Vitamins and smaller independent grocery stores all totaled less than 1,000 monthly visitors a piece, according to the data.

Though Costco is known for its die-hard fans, the store did see a marked drop in monthly foot traffic between April and May 2022, while other grocery stores did not see as much of a drop at the same time, according to the data.
