SLO County residents, businesses impacted by storm get more time to file taxes

San Luis Obispo County residents and businesses impacted by this winter’s damaging storms will have even more time to file their taxes this year.

The IRS granted an extension for filing individual and business tax returns for 51 California counties that were hit hard by rain, flooding and other damage during the destructive storms that have slammed the state since the start of the year, according to a news release from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office.

Now, the deadline for filing taxes for SLO County residents is Oct. 16.

“As communities across the state continue recovering from the damage caused by the winter storms, California is working swiftly to help recovering Californians get back on their feet,” Newsom said in the news release.

The extension applies to 2022 individual tax returns traditionally due on April 18, along with the quarterly estimated tax payments usually due Jan. 17 and April 18, the news release said. Businesses whose tax returns are typically due March 15 and Sept. 15 also qualify for the extension.

SLO County residents are also eligible for a tax deduction for storm damage.

Residents in areas where President Joe Biden declared an emergency during the winter storms “may claim a disaster loss when filing either an original or amended tax year 2022 tax return,” the news release said.

“When filing their return, taxpayers should write the name of the disaster in blue or black ink at the top of their tax return,” the news release said. “If filing electronically, taxpayers should follow the software instructions to enter disaster information.”
