Popular discount chain closing SLO store after 11 years

The national discount chain retailer Dollar Tree is closing its store in the SLO Promenade.

The last day for the business will be June 6, and the shop currently is offering a clearance sale on refrigerated foods: four items for a dollar.

The store, one of two locations in San Luis Obispo, sells items for $1 or less, including food, party and office supplies, cleaning goods, and more. It’s located across the plaza from Bed, Bath & Beyond and opened in 2011.

“We do close stores occasionally for a variety of reasons, including sale of the property, end of a lease term, etc.,” Kayleigh Painter, Dollar Tree’s media relations representative, told The Tribune in an email.

Painter didn’t respond to questions about specifically why the SLO store is closing.

The company is allowing its store employees to transfer to other local locations, a clerk told The Tribune.

A store sign asks customers to visit its other SLO location at 2238 Broad St. in The Village at Broad shopping center. That location will remain open.

Besides the SLO locations, Dollar Tree also has local stores in Morro Bay, Atascadero, Paso Robles, Arroyo Grande and Santa Maria.

Headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, the company operates more than 15,000 stores, including its Family Dollar brand, across the 48 contiguous states and five Canadian provinces, with more than 193,000 associates, according to Dollar Tree’s website.
