Lose a pet in SLO County? Here’s what to do

Even very large things get lost and this week someone misplaced two great Danes.

These gentle giants were affable boys with no identification — not even a phone number written on their collars.

They also lacked microchips, which can be scanned at most veterinarian offices, and county license tags, which link dogs to owners. All this prevented the person who found these ambling boys from returning them home.

Not being particularly energetic, one wonders why the dogs left. It’s a good bet, not being neutered, they were following their noses in search of romance.

Whatever the impetus, the great Danes ended up bunking at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter.

Rarely do owners come and claim their pets. In reality, barely 20% do.

Attempting to improve the odds, shelter staff ensures that every pet brought to the shelter — as well as those reported as found and being cared for by residents — are posted on the county’s website at https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/Departments/Health-Agency/Animal-Services/Lost-and-Found-Animals.aspx.

Additionally, a daily recorded message is made describing all the animals brought to the shelter or found by a good Samaritan for that day.

Lost a pet? Report it to Animal Services online and be sure to check the recorded message every day at 805-781-4407.

All shelter animals are held for five business days, after which they’re available for adoption.

Fortunately, the owner of the Great Danes located the dogs at the shelter, and the two roaming Romeos are back home.
