Pet Tales

These sweet senior dogs are best buddies. Now they need a new home

When it comes to things we’re thankful for, family often tops the list.

For many of us, our pets are family and we know they love us as much as we love them.

Sandy and Romo are two senior poodle mixes who’ve never doubted the lovability of people. Though their humans haven’t always been there for them, Sandy and Romo have always been there for each other.

They unquestioningly appreciate the kindness of people, even though they’ve been abandoned, relegated to sleeping in a barn and are now homeless at the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter.

Fortunately they’ve always had each other.

Romo’s an affectionate 11-year-old bichon frise mix who has a happy nature and a jaunty trot, even though he needs to lose a few pounds.

Sandy, a 14-year-old Maltese mix, has a sweet disposition and a positive outlook on life. She loves to play fetch, and if the ball’s too big, she’ll push it along with her nose so you can throw it again.

These happy dogs don’t know what people know — that although Sandy has lots of life in her, she also has an inoperable tumor. Sandy needs a hospice home that includes Romo.

To help find this special home, adopt them both for the price of one.

Additionally, Animal Services will pay for Romo’s teeth cleaning and the nonprofit Animal Shelter Adoption Partners is providing $100 for future veterinary care.

Take a leap for love and invite Romo and Sandy home.

For more information about Romo (ID No. 233644) and Sandy (No. 23798), call the volunteer line at the Animal Services shelter at 805-781-4400 or visit www.slocounty.ca.gov/aserv. The shelter is located at 885 Oklahoma Ave., off Highway 1, in San Luis Obispo.

The full-price adoption fee is $81 for cats and $115 for dogs, plus a $28 county license fee for dogs, if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents.

The adoption fee includes a new collar, a spay or neuter operation, basic vaccinations, a microchip and eligibility for a free veterinary check within San Luis Obispo County. Cats also are tested for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and adopters receive a carrier.
