Hot dogs are returning to iconic Frank’s Famous spot in SLO. Here’s what we know
The iconic Frank’s Famous restaurant in San Luis Obispo has a new owner who plans to honor the spot’s legacy, bringing hot dogs back to the red-roofed building at the corner of Monterey Street and California Boulevard.
And it’s a familiar name from the SLO restaurant scene.
Nate Long, owner of Nate’s on Marsh, teased his new endeavor in a collection of videos on Instagram that show him about to bite into an all-dressed hot dog, before he suddenly leaves his eponymous eatery, drives over to Frank’s and enters through the previously locked doors of the shuttered restaurant.
The videos released last week serve as an announcement for Good Boy, the next concept coming to the iconic space that the hot dog, burger and breakfast place had called home since 1977.
It closed earlier this year after the death of Toney Breault, who owned Frank’s, Buffalo Pub & Grill and McLintocks.
“While we’re not quite ready to reveal everything just yet, we can tell you that we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to create Good Boy,” an Instagram post read. “Good Boy is a personality-driven, fast casual brand that honors the location’s rich legacy in San Luis Obispo for a new generation.”
In one of the video’s, Long can be seen sitting in one of Frank’s classic red booths, displaying a boot with “Franks” written on its sole.
“Franks Famous Hot Dogs ran so we could walk,” the post reads. “To say we have big boots to fill would be an understatement. The legacy that came before Good Boy is one that has shaped this community.”
The post goes on to say that “serving hot dogs since 1977, the tradition must go on,” implying that one thing on Good Boy’s future menu is certain: The hot dogs will remain.
Good Boy goes on to showcase its new logo, calling it “intentionally bold and western,” and while no opening date had been shared as of Tuesday, the incoming restaurant encouraged those interested to sign up for the latest news on its website at goodboyinslo.com.
