Southern-style barbecue joint closes in SLO County. ‘This was not an easy choice’
A San Luis Obispo County restaurant known for serving classic Southern-style barbecue shut its doors after 18 months in business.
Savory Smoke Barbecue at 897 Main St. in Morro Bay closed in early February, according to a sign posted on the storefront.
The restaurant’s co-owners Sean and Stephanie Hale said in their closing announcement that it was a “difficult decision” to end service at the barbecue joint.
“This was not an easy choice,” they said in the note. “We are incredibly grateful for the support, loyalty and friendships we’ve built within this community. It has truly been an honor to serve you.”
What was Savory Smoke in Morro Bay?
Savory Smoke served up meals that were “Memphis-inspired with a California twist,” Stephanie Hale previously told The Tribune.
She and her husband Sean opened the restaurant in September 2024. Hale said she drew on her Southern roots to craft a menu packed with flavors from her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.
Savory Smoke offered diners a 12-item menu that included appetizers like Southern-style chicken nachos, fried chicken wings and jalapeño poppers.
The restaurant’s main dishes ranged from smoked St. Louis-style pork ribs to a smoked pork loin sandwich.
“We wanted a spot the locals could call their own,” she said at the time.
The eatery’s last day in business was Feb. 8, according to the sign. The Hales did not provide a reason for their abrupt closure.
“We want to sincerely thank every guest, team member, supplier and neighbor who helped make this journey so meaningful,” the owners said in the note. “Your kindness and support will always be remembered.”
