Cal Poly grad’s ‘Titanic’ TikTok to be featured on ‘Greatest #AtHome Videos’
A San Luis Obispo woman has found viral video fame using only her hands, a mirror and the “Titanic” theme song.
Cal Poly graduate Katie Sanchez created a popular TikTok video that will be featured Friday night on CBS’s “The Greatest #AtHome Videos.”
“I never expected this to happen,” Sanchez, 24, acknowledged. “I was not expecting this at all from posting one video. I didn’t even think it was that good.”
Hosted by actor and comedian Cedric the Entertainer, “The Greatest #AtHome Videos” showcases “the next generation of viral home videos in the age of social distancing,” press materials for the show say.
The CBS clip show premiered as a one-hour special, “The Greatest #StayAtHome Videos,” in May before returning July 24 with four more weekly, hourlong episodes. Friday’s special is the fourth and final installment of the current series.
Sanchez’s video, which she posted to TikTok on June 14, features a funny moment set to an instrumental cover of “My Heart Will Go On” by Malileh Saeedi and Faraz Taali.
In the video, Sanchez appears to reach her fingers toward her bathroom mirror, only to magically clasp her own mirrored hand.
The video then reveals that Sanchez is actually holding both hands in front of her — and filming the scene with her smartphone in her mouth.
“Why is this my new favorite thing?” a credulous Sanchez writes in her caption.
“I literally posted it and went, “This is dumb. ... Nobody’s going to like it,’ ” Sanchez recalled Friday.
But within 20 minutes, the video “started blowing up” on TikTok, she said. “I was blown away by all the likes and followers I got.”
As of early Friday afternoon, the TikTok video had garnered more than 150,000 likes and more than 1,600 comments.
Sanchez, who works in human resources at Target in San Luis Obispo, said a CBS representative then approached her about featuring her video on “The Greatest #StayAtHome Videos.”
Sanchez said she’s watched and posted “a lot of videos” on TikTok since the coronavirus pandemic started. “Nothing went super viral until now,” the Vacaville native said.
But the experience has inspired her to step up her game.
“I need to start coming up with more content now,” she said with a chuckle.” “I wasn’t expecting this kind of responsibility.”
