Popular SLO bakery closes its doors — but maybe not forever, the owners say
About three years after opening in San Luis Obispo, popular pastry shop Joliene Bakery has shut its doors.
The company announced Oct. 2 that it was officially closing its shop in The Creamery on Higuera Street. The company did not disclose why it was closing, saying on Instagram only that the closure was “hopefully not a definite farewell, but a ‘see you later.’ ”
The shop, owned by the husband-and-wife team of Chloe and Thomas Fertel, was one of several businesses to open in The Creamery following a massive overhaul of the center in 2019.
Joliene Bakery rose in local popularity in the past three years thanks to a dedicated fan base who enjoyed the shop’s English muffins, French macarons and other delicious treats.
“Where to begin? Thank you to the beautiful SLO community; it’s authors, artisans, chefs, families, neighbors and more who have had our back from the start and who brightened our doorways,” the company said in its Instagram post. “Our staff (both past and present) who put there blood, sweat and tears into our little dream of a bakeshop. To the memories, both good and bad, exhilarating and exhausting, that will bring smiles to our faces and laughter to our hearts for many years to come. To it all, we are eternally grateful.”
As of Monday, the company’s website has been disabled and a request for comment on the closure via the Joliene Bakery Instagram was not immediately returned.
