A San Luis Obispo vegan takeout restaurant opened its second location in downtown Paso Robles on Jan. 1.

Located at 1227 Pine St., Ziggy’s serves plant-based food, including burgers, tacos and all-day breakfast.

Burgers come with an Impossible Burger or a homemade Ziggy patty made with black and pinto beans, carrots, corn, bell peppers and spices.

The vegan takeout spot dishes out a variety of sides, including avocado egg rolls, onions rings and specialty fries.

For dessert, Ziggy’s offers chocolate, strawberry and vanilla shakes made with plant-based ice cream from Scoop the Magic, a San Luis Obispo-based business.

Co-owners Brian Englund and Matthew Martinez said Ziggy’s was born out of a lack of plant-based options on the Central Coast.

The two met at Morro Bay High School in their 10th-grade English class.

Englund owns the three Sylvester’s locations in Atascadero, Los Osos and Oceano, and Kuma in Los Osos, a ramen and sushi restaurant. Martinez returned to the Central Coast with about 20 years of experience working in Orange County restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

According to Martinez, the two experimented with following a more plant-based diet. However, both discovered limited options for convenient vegan food.

“We made a restaurant that we wanted to eat at,” Martinez said. “We want to be that reliable seven-day-a-week spot where you know you can get a plant-based meal.”

Ziggy’s original location opened in February 2020 less than a mile from Cal Poly’s campus at 594 California Blvd.

“The outpouring of love and support from the community was overwhelming,” Martinez said. “It’s great to finally be open to serve our food and show everyone what we do.”

Ziggy’s is open every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
