SLO County restaurant inspections: See the lowest- and highest-rated in November

One restaurant had mildew from a leak in the refrigerator, two were missing paper towels at handwashing sinks and several had food debris and grease buildups.

Those were some of the notable conditions San Luis Obispo County health inspectors found in November during hundreds of surprise visits to eating and drinking establishments.

Many food and beverage sellers passed with flying colors, while others needed to make serious improvements.

Every month, The Tribune prints the lowest- and highest-ranked eateries to give diners more information about the places where they buy food and drinks.

Inspectors visit restaurants, bars, coffee shops, grocery stores, mini-marts and more on a monthly basis. They score eateries on a 100-point scale and make deductions based on the severity of the violations they find.

Here are the highs and lows of the 138 inspections Environmental Health employees conducted in November.

Lowest-rated restaurants

Subway, 106 Niblick Road, Paso Robles

Points lost: 15.5

Notes: The inspector observed there were no paper towels in the restroom, and the sanitizer bucket did not contain enough cleaning solution. A large leak inside the walk-in refrigerator was also causing mildew to grow on the floor of the unit.

San Miguel Market & Deli, 1299 Mission St., San Miguel

Points lost: 13.5

Notes: The inspector noticed the market was offering homemade lard/manteca for sale without California Department of Public Health approval. In addition, the inspector saw “food debris and grime accumulation on counters, cutting boards, in between shelving” and noticed raw meats being stored above ready-to-eat foods in a walk-in refrigerator.

Villa Del Mar, 1100 West Grand Ave., Grover Beach

Points lost: 13

Notes: The inspector noticed a container of bleach and and food debris in the handwashing sink. There was also “food, grease, and debris” on equipment surfaces throughout the kitchen.

Sunsets at Pismo, 1 Pier Plaza, Pismo Beach

Points lost: 11

Notes: The inspector observed food prep surfaces were “not being adequately sanitized.” There was no sanitizing bucket set up near the cook line while food was being prepared, and staff were leaving wiping cloths on food prep surfaces. No paper towels were available at the handwashing sink at the start of the inspection.
