SLO County restaurant inspections: See the lowest- and highest-rated in October
One restaurant had mildew in its ice machine, one was storing cooked food at room temperature and several had issues with glove use and handwashing.
Those were some of the notable conditions San Luis Obispo County health inspectors found in October during hundreds of surprise visits to eating and drinking establishments.
Many food and beverage sellers passed with flying colors, while others needed to make serious improvements.
Every month, The Tribune prints the lowest- and highest-ranked eateries to give diners more information about the places where they buy food and drinks.
Inspectors visit restaurants, bars, coffee shops, grocery stores, mini-marts and more on a monthly basis. They score eateries on a 100-point scale and make deductions based on the severity of the violations they find.

Here are the highs and lows of the inspections Environmental Health employees conducted in October.
Lowest-rated restaurants
La Tapatia Market & Deli, 646 South 13th St., Grover Beach
Points lost: 26
Notes: Inspectors observed the handwashing sink was obstructed and contained dirty dishes. They also noted that food contact surfaces were not being sanitized, food was being improperly stored and cooled and employees did not demonstrate “food safety knowledge practices applicable to their assigned duties.”
Palo Mesa Pizza, 2790 Halcyon Road, Arroyo Grande
Points lost: 18
Notes: Inspectors observed improper handwashing and glove use. They also noticed mildew growth in the ice machine and saw the entrance door propped open with flies in the kitchen and warewashing areas.
Coffee Express, 1156 East Grand Ave., Arroyo Grande
Points lost: 15.5
Notes: Inspectors observed improper glove use and doors and windows open without screens or fly fans. They also saw cooked bacon, breakfast wraps and cream cheese cinnamon rolls stored at room temperature.
Touch of Paso, 1414 Pine St., Paso Robles
Points lost: 13.5
Notes: Inspectors observed an empty soap dispenser at the cook line handwash sink. They also saw sanitizer buckets with chlorine levels that were too low, as well as fish being thawed on a counter and hash browns being thawed on the floor.
These businesses also lost 10 or more points due to violations.
