New SLO County restaurant opens in old tavern spot — and a brewery is next

A new restaurant has opened in Los Osos’ Baywood Park neighborhood — and a brewery is next.

Beerwood opened in April at 690 Santa Maria Ave. in the former location of the Baywood Tavern. It’s located across the street from High Street Deli sandwich shop, which opened in late July.

Six friends pooled their money together to buy the Santa Maria Avenue property and received construction help from family members and friends to upgrade the building space.

“We were able to get enough money together somehow during the (coronavirus) pandemic,” said Troy Gatchell, one of the partners. “For us, this is our community and it was important for us to bring (a dining space) back to the community.”

The other partners are Alex Flores, Annie Steinmann, Blake Lohman and Liana Harlan.

Steinmann formerly managed Back Bay Cafe at 1399 Second St. in Los Osos.

Beerwood serves up sandwiches including panini, sliders and bratwurst as well as pasta, salads, soups and charcuterie. Drink options include beer, wine, seltzer and hard kombucha.

There’s also a patio space that accommodates kids and dogs.

Gatchell said he and his partners came up with the restaurant’s name by mixing familiar terms.

“We went through several names and we liked the sound of combining beer and Baywood together,” Gatchell said. “So we settled on Beerwood.”

Gatchell, a homebrewer, said that Beerwood plans to open its new brewery by the end of the year.

“The brewery will offer my own craft beers with a constant rotation of different styles,” Gatchell said. “However, my specialty is Belgian style ales.”

Beerwood is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The kitchen closes about 8 p.m. during the week and about 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Phone orders can be made 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
