High Street Deli owner opens second SLO County spot — with patio, bottle shop
After more than two years of planning, popular San Luis Obispo sandwich shop High Street Deli has launched its second San Luis Obispo location.
High Street Deli held a soft opening for its new Los Osos spot last week.
The deli is operating under limited hours as the staff gets settled in at 1326 Second St., the former location of The Sculptured Egg.
“The new High Street Baywood Park spot is going to feature some of our most popular sandwiches from our SLO location plus Hearst Ranch beef burgers, chicken cutlet sandwiches and our Cuban (sandwich),” restaurant owner Randy “Doobie” Coates wrote in an email. “We’ll also be featuring French fries and Straus organic soft serve ice cream. “
“We’ve built a great kid- and parent-friendly patio with a play kitchen for the kids to stay entertained,” he added, “and six beers and four wines on tap for the parents to sit back and relax.”
Coates said the eatery includes a gift shop and market featuring a bottle shop selling wine from small, family-owned wineries, beer and curated goods.
High Street Deli opens in Los Osos
High Street Deli originally opened in San Luis Obispo in 1927 as a market selling “everything from milk, butter, chewing tobacco and fishing gear,” the sandwich shop’s website states.
“Throughout a century, High Street Market and Deli has been a lot of people’s corner store but in the recent years, it’s become San Luis Obispo’s original sandwich joint,” the website notes.
Coates has owned High Street Deli — a popular spot for students, neighborhood residents and locals at 350 High St. — since 2000.
He lives in Los Osos with his wife, Kayla, and two children, ages 4 and 6.
“We ... wanted to bring High Street closer to our home and wanted something great for the community,” Doobie Coates added.
He saw an opportunity to do so when the owners of The Sculptured Egg restaurant retired and put their commercial property, including an 1,860-square-foot building, up for sale.
Coates purchased the Second Street property in early 2019, improving the commercial space in recent months.
Coates originally planned to open a restaurant serving California coastal cuisine such as fish tacos that he anticipated calling Randy’s Shack.
But after further consideration, he decided to bring High Street Deli to Los Osos, he told The Tribune.
“It took two and a half years to build this place,” Coates said. “We had to pull all new utilities, get the planning and building permits. Then the pandemic hit (and) some personal things happened ...”
The restaurant co-owner said he has been working 16-hour days to get the new deli up and running, together with a small staff.
“The kids have been at the restaurant every day lately as well,” Coates wrote. “They will be making sandwiches in no time, LOL.”
According to Coates, the Los Osos High Street Deli will operate 11 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Thursday through Monday to start.
The eatery will extend its open hours in the afternoon after the staff is better situated and trained, he wrote.
