Frozen yogurt shop closes in downtown San Luis Obispo after more than 5 years

The frozen yogurt chain Yogurtland has closed its shop on Higuera Street, marking yet another business to leave downtown San Luis Obispo.

Yogurtland, located at 956 Higuera St. near Louisa’s Place, Urbane Cafe and We Olive — announced that it’s closing the SLO shop and “several other stores permanently,” said John Rossetti, who’s part of the landlord group, Bucket of Blood, that owns the property.

“Yogurtland has stated that they are closing this, and several other stores permanently,” Rossetti said. “The space is for lease, however we want to make some improvements to the space. We are talking to a few prospective tenants, however it is not committed at this time.”

Yogurtland opened its SLO fro-yo shop in 2015 with a wall of 16 flavors and a topping bar with 60 options, including fruit and other healthy choices, according to a news release at the time.

Yogurtland officials didn’t return requests for comment in recent days.

Hard hit downtown SLO economy

Customers noticed the store had closed its doors on Feb. 19, and workers said the business was shutting its doors permanently.

Of late, a sign was posted on the space noting “Temporarily Closed. Sorry for the Inconvenience” and equipment was gone from the empty storefront.

The business joins Peet’s and Ambercrombie & Fitch on the same block to close in recent months, as well as the Thai-styled ice cream business Rolld on Marsh Street, which closed two weeks ago.

Rossetti said, “We would appreciate any interested parties contact John Hans at Rossetti Company to inquire” about tenancy at the business space.

The city of SLO and the Downtown SLO organization have offered a host of measures to help businesses strained by the pandemic.

The city has helped facilitate parklets, disbursed $5,000 grants, expedited tenant improvement permits, and rolled out a Buy Local Bonus program offering $20 gift cards to anyone who purchased $100 worth of items at small businesses in the city.

Downtown SLO also created a refined business directory to help shoppers find various types of businesses that are open and operating, as well as organized decorative and event-driven activities to draw people to downtown SLO and encourage support of local business.
