‘Hairspray’ director John Waters is coming to SLO’s Madonna Inn — for an Easter egg hunt

Want to spend Easter with John Waters?

The cult filmmaker is coming to San Luis Obispo’s famed Madonna Inn in April for some springtime fun.

John Waters Easter will feature a 30th anniversary screening of the movie “Cry-Baby” with live commentary by Waters, followed by a question-and-answer session with “surprise special guests,” according to the event’s website.

In addition, attendees can take part in the Edith Massey Memorial Easter Egghunt on the hotel’s scenic grounds. (Massey, a snaggle-toothed actress who appeared in many of Waters’ films, died in 1984.)

Live musical performances are also promised at the John Waters Easter event.

Known for envelope-pushing cult favorites such as “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester” and “Female Trouble,” Waters found mainstream success as the director of the comedy “Hairspray,” about a dance-loving teen in 1960s Baltimore. That movie inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn inspired a big-budget movie musical.

“I remember standing on stage holding a Tony and thinking, ‘Now I can wear ascots,’ “ Waters joked to The Tribune in 2009.

That’s the year the Baltimore-born filmmaker with the pencil mustache performed his one-man show, “This Filthy World,” at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. He brought “This Filthy World” to the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo in 2014.

Despite the event’s name, John Waters Easter is not actually on Easter. It will take place the day before the religious holiday, on Saturday, April 11.

General admission tickets for the 21-and-up event, which cost $115 apiece, appear to already be sold out.

But there are still tickets available for a $226 meet-and-greet, or you can shell out $565 to have brunch with Waters.
