County Jail inmate died of cardiac arrest, Sheriff's Office says

San Luis Obispo County sheriff's officials released the cause of death today for an inmate who died in custody on Nov. 12.

Joseph Morillo, 43, died of cardiac arrest due to thickening of the heart muscle and morbid obesity, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

Morillo, a transient, was found unconscious in a cell and pronounced dead at 4:33 p.m. after unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him, spokesman Tony Cipolla said last week.

He was booked into County Jail on Sept. 30 by Paso Robles police on suspicion of making terrorist threats. He was being held in a safety cell designed for inmates considered a danger to themselves or others, Cipolla said.
