Four rescued from capsized vessel in Morro Bay

The Morro Bay Harbor Patrol rescued four people, including an 8-year-old girl, after their boat capsized in the Morro Bay harbor Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from the city of Morro Bay.

Harbor patrol members received a “mayday” call about 1 p.m. Waves about 10 to 12 feet high were reported near the south jetty.

The boat was hit by a wave and capsized about 500 feet from the beach, according to the release. Two adult men, a woman and her child fell into the water.

All four were eventually taken to the hospital, and the woman will stay overnight after inhaling a substantial amount of water.

Two Harbor Patrol vessels arrived on the scene within five minutes of each other. A rescue swimmer brought the woman and her daughter to safety with help from the Morro Bay Fire Department. The swimmer then brought the men to safety with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Because of the ocean conditions, the Coast Guard had posted warning signs about the dangers of the waves.
