Woman killed in Santa Margarita car crash is identified

The California Highway Patrol has identified the woman who died Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on Park Hill Road in Santa Margarita.

Joni Kinkel, 54, of Santa Margarita, died at the scene of the crash, officials say.

According to the CHP, a 1992 Honda Prelude driven by a 20-year-old San Luis Obispo resident was traveling north on Park Hill Road south of Seven Oaks Ranch at about noon Sunday.

Kinkel, driving a 2005 Dodge Stratus, was driving south at an unknown speed. The road was wet from a recent rain, the CHP says, and the Honda lost traction as it navigated a curve. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which traveled into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the Dodge.

The driver of the Honda suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Kinkel was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
