Van engulfed in flames at Santa Rosa Park in San Luis Obispo
A man was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after his van caught fire in the parking lot of Santa Rosa Park in San Luis Obispo.
The San Luis Obispo Fire Department was dispatched to the scene about 2:45 p.m. When they arrived minutes later, the 1998 Chevrolet Astro van was engulfed in flames, said John MacDonald, acting battalion chief.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The owner of the vehicle suffered minor burns to his hands. No other injuries were sustained. No buildings were damaged, but a nearby tree suffered fire exposure, MacDonald said. He added that the car was a total loss.
The man was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and released, said Sean Gillham, patrol sergeant for the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
The fire is suspicious in nature and an active investigation is underway, Gillham said.
