Memorial planned for SLO High grad killed in Isla Vista
A memorial service for Christopher Michaels-Martinez, 20, who was killed by a gunman in Isla Vista last month, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mountainbrook Community Church, 1775 Calle Joaquin, in San Luis Obispo. Community members are welcome to attend.
Michaels-Martinez, who graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 2012, was a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara. He had planned to attend Queen Mary College University of London his junior year.
Michaels-Martinez has been described by friends as invariably smiling, even-keeled and focused. He is survived by his parents, Caryn Michaels and Richard Martinez, and his grandmother, Jean Michaels-Fishwick. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, scholarship donations be made in his memory to the UCSB Foundation: Attn: Chris Pizzinat, 4219 Cheadle Hall, UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA 93106.
