Atascadero commission to consider proposed La Plaza development

A new retail development proposed for downtown Atascadero is slated to go before the city’s Planning Commission on Tuesday night.

The project, called the La Plaza Downtown Retail Center, would be built at El Camino Real and Atascadero Mall.

The parcel, owned by the Ben Hoff family, was the 30-year home to North County Christian School’s thrift store before a fire destroyed the shop in March 2009. It was also the site of the ill-fated La Plaza Cinemas project in 2010 that called for a second movie theater, shops and a restaurant brought by Paso Robles’ Park Cinemas owner John Roush.

The new plan consists of 26,500 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space within three buildings and 78 parking spaces in the back. After the proposal leaves the commission, it will need City Council approval. The commission meets at 7 p.m. at the City Hall council chambers, 6907 El Camino Real.
