Cal Poly men’s basketball cancels first 2 Big West home games due to COVID
The Cal Poly men’s basketball program has canceled its scheduled first two Big West Conference matchups due to COVID-19 protocols.
And Cal Poly’s women’s basketball team also won’t be able to play its scheduled game on Saturday in Fullerton after it was canceled due to COVID protocols within the Titan program.
The Mustangs men’s team was expected to face Long Beach State on Thursday and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
“(The games) have been canceled due to COVID protocols within the Mustang program,” Cal Poly officials said in a news release.
The games for both the men and women will be declared a no contest and will not be rescheduled.
“All single-game tickets purchased for either contest will be refunded,” the university noted about the men’s scheduling. “Season ticket holders and Stampede Club members will receive concession coupons to be used for Cal Poly’s next scheduled home game (Thursday, Jan. 13 versus UC Riverside).”
Cal Poly teams vaccinated
Cal Poly Athletic Director Don Olberhelman told The Tribune that all of the players on both squads have at least two COVID-19 vaccine shots and nobody on the men’s team is symptomatic.
“I’m sure that (vaccination) has something to do with the reason why nobody’s really symptomatic,” said Olberhelman.
Olberhelman said that on the men’s side, the team has to have at least seven healthy players able to play, meaning that a majority of the team’s 16 players likely have contracted the virus.
Olberhelman said that once the protocols are completed, the men should be available to play the rest of the season due to NCAA testing policy that clears athletes who are at least two weeks post-infection and within 90 days of the first known date of infection.
But that depends on the availability of other teams in the conference.
“I see a big pause for a couple of weeks, as several games were already called off, and then honestly, it might be business back to normal in terms of at least playing games,” Olberhelman said.
