Former Cal Poly pitcher Bryan Woo sets new major league record
Former Cal Poly pitcher Bryan Woo has set a new major league record.
Since the season began, the all-star right-hander who plays for the Seattle Mariners has gone at least six innings in each of his 25 starts while allowing just two walks or fewer in each of those outings, a new MLB mark according to the Mariners.
In 1968, Juan Marichal started the season with 23 games of at least six innings and no more than two walks.
Woo, a 25-year-old Oakland native, improved to 11-7 with a 2.94 ERA after throwing seven innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks, in a 3-2 win over the Athletics on Friday.
Woo has posted 160 strikeouts on the season, 14th in the MLB.
“I don’t think it’s talked about enough now with pitching — going deep into games and innings,” Woo told the New York Times. “A lot of it’s just about strikeouts and velo and all that stuff. Being a workhorse is something that’s hard to quantify beyond innings, but I think the team feels it, the staff feels it, the coaches, the bullpen. It’s something that I take pride in.”
Woo has earned high praise from his manager Dan Wilson for his consistency and effectiveness throughout the season, going deep into games and helping his team snap a five-game losing streak on Friday.
The Mariners are currently in second place in the American League West, two games behind the Houston Astros.
Woo pitched for Cal Poly from 2019 to 2021 before being selected by the Mariners in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB draft as the 174th overall pick.
Woo has pitched in three MLB seasons for the Mariners, posting a 24-15 record with a 3.23 ERA.
Woo’s fastball peaks in the mid- to high 90s to match with his sinker, slider and changeup arsenal.
