Throwback baseball is coming to SLO this weekend. Here’s how to see a free game

Want to see what baseball was like in the 1800s?

Vintage games — mimicking the uniforms, gloves and playing style of the late 19th century — comes to San Luis Obispo this weekend.

The games will be held for free for fans, with four separate games to be played at Sinsheimer Stadium in SLO on Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday schedule will feature noon and 2:45 games.

On Sunday, games will be held at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with teams coming down to play from the Bay Area.

“Vintage base ball is big on the East Coast and Midwest,” said James Stapleton, an event organizer. “Almost 15 years ago a group of gentlemen in the Bay Area wanted to play vintage ball and selected 1886 as the year they wanted to play.”

Stapleton said the fan experience will be “competitive, educational and very entertaining.”

“Watching players play with vintage equipment is riveting, but we do play a slower game than fans come to expect from a typical Major League Baseball game,” Stapleton said. “During a match, fans can expect to pick up on the rules, some period-appropriate ball game lingo and even a favorite ball club.”
