SLO County baseball players sign contracts with MLB teams. Here’s how much they’ll get
Three of four Cal Poly baseball players selected in July’s Major League Baseball draft have signed professional contracts, according to a university news release.
A San Luis Obispo County high school graduate who played baseball at UC Berkeley has inked his pro contract as well.
Shortstop Brooks Lee, the No. 8 overall pick of the Minnesota Twins, signed for $5.675 million, exceeding the slot pick value of $5.43 million.
Lee, 21, is the highest pick ever out of Cal Poly or of any player in San Luis Obispo County, including high school and community college prospects. He is the fourth Mustang to be taken in the first round, including supplemental picks, according to the San Luis Obispo university.
Drew Thorpe, a right-handed pitcher who joined the Cal Poly team in 2020 as a freshman, was selected in the second round by the New York Yankees. The 21-year-old inked a signing bonus of $1.187 million on Sunday.
Jason Franks, a right-handed pitcher who served in relief for the Mustangs, signed for $2,500 after being chosen in the eighth round by the Atlanta Braves.
The eighth round slot value was $176,400. Franks, 23, had exhausted his eligibility at Cal Poly last spring.
Franks played two years of club baseball at Cal Poly — his freshman and sophomore years at the university — before making the NCAA collegiate team as a walk-on as a junior, rarely seeing playing time in 2020 and 2021.
Franks posted a 3.17 ERA with 69 strikeouts and 11 saves as the Mustangs’ closer in 2022.
Dylan Beavers, a Mission Prep graduate from Paso Robles who played baseball at UC Berkeley, signed for $2.2 million with the Baltimore Orioles.
Beavers, 20, was selected No. 33 overall. The slot value was $2.32 million.
Another Mustang right-handed pitcher, 21-year-old Derek True, drafted in the final round by the Oakland Athletics, was still unsigned as of Tuesday.
