Former Cal Poly baseball player called up to join Milwaukee Brewers

A former Cal Poly ballplayer has been called up to join the Milwaukee Brewers’ Major League team.

Infielder Mark Mathias, 26, is expected to become Cal Poly’s 18th Major League player; Cal Poly also had a coach serve at the MLB level, Cal Poly said in a news release.

Mathias, a Mustang baseball player from 2013-2015, was recalled from the Milwaukee Brewers’ alternate camp in Appleton, Wisconsin, on Monday.

At the start of Monday’s game, he had yet to see action but was in the dugout on the Brewers’ 30-man roster in a game against the White Sox.

Mathias played all of last season at Class AAA Columbus in the Cleveland organization, tallying a career-high .797 on-base plus slugging (OPS) percentage with a .269 batting average, 12 home runs, 59 RBI and 13 stolen bases over 115 games.

Mathias was a third-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 2015 and has a .258 batting average in five minor league seasons, according to Cal Poly officials. In December, he was traded by the Indians to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for catcher Andres Melendez.

Cal Poly second baseman Mark Mathias was the Big West Conference Field Player of the Year in 2014 when he led the Big West with a .386 batting average. Mathias got called up to the Brewers’ MLB team on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020.

Mathias joined infielder Ryon Healy, also recalled Monday, and they took the place of Lorenzo Cain (who opted out of playing in 2020) and Ryan Braun (who’s on the injured list). Healy was in the starting lineup against the White Sox.

Mathias is a graduate of Irvington High School in Fremont, California.

Mathias was one of five former Mustangs named to the 60-man player pools of their respective teams, Cal Poly officials said.

The others were: Brian Mundell of the Colorado Rockies; Spencer Howard and Bud Norris of the Philadelphia Phillies; and Mitch Haniger of the Seattle Mariners.
