Cal Poly men’s soccer falls to Air Force, remains winless

The Cal Poly men’s soccer team is still looking for its first win of the season following a 1-0 loss Friday to Air Force in the opener of New Mexico’s TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Invitational in Albuquerque.

Mustangs goalkeeper Simon Boehme registered five saves, but it was a 15th-minute goal by Air Force midfielder Tucker Bone stood as the difference.

It was Cal Poly’s (0-3-0) second one-goal decision in as many matches despite outshooting Air Force (1-1-0) 13-10. Just two Mustangs’ shots were on target.

Air Force struck when Bone broke through the Cal Poly backline. Boehme stopped an initial one-versus-one attempt, but Bone tapped in the rebound to put Air Force up 1-0.

The Mustangs opened the second half with three shot attempts inside the opening five minutes and chalked up their first shot on target in the 66th when freshman midfielder Christian Enriquez found freshman forward Sebastian Herran in the penalty area with a free kick. Herran’s header, however, was collected by Air Force goalkeeper Jake Schenk.

Six minutes later, senior defender Kody Wakasa blistered a shot from 30 yards that was gloved over the crossbar by Schenk.

Cal Poly’s best opportunity to equalize late occurred 56 seconds from full time after junior forward Adam Olsen drew a foul at the top of the Air Force penalty box. Senior forward Justin Dhillon, however, drove a shot over the crossbar.

The Mustangs close a four-match road trip against New Mexico on Sunday.
