Prep roundup: Mission Prep girls volleyball stays undefeated with win over Morro Bay

The Mission Prep girls volleyball team remained undefeated on the young season with a 3-0 win Tuesday over Morro Bay.

Jennifer “Boo” Laird led the way with 11 kills for the Royals in the 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 win.

Setter Erin Desjardins played well for Morro Bay in the loss, netting 18 assists, four blocks and four aces. Ellie Fryer chipped in five kills and three blocks for Morro Bay.

“Mission Prep is a pretty good test,” Morro Bay head coach James Bueno said. “I thought we played them pretty well.”

Morro Bay (0-2) will go on the road to play Pioneer Valley on Thursday, and Mission Prep (2-0) plays host to Nipomo on Thursday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Nipomo 3, Coast Union 0

Nipomo’s Mackenzie Bland had six kills and four aces as the Titans swept 25-10, 25-15, 25-11. Hope Goodall had five kills, and Kylie Mendez added four aces for Nipomo (2-0). The Titans play Mission Prep on Thursday.

Ailyn Casas had a game-high 12 kills, and Hayley Zinn added 10 kills for the Broncos. Karis Lawson added 10 kills and four blocks for Coast Union (0-2), who take on Templeton on Thursday.

Templeton 3, Atascadero 2

Templeton squeezed past Atascadero in a five-set match on Tuesday.

Cheyenne Rice led the Eagles in kills with 11 in the 25-27, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11 win.

Maddie Johnson added nine kills and Mannah McRoy had 38 assist for Templeton (1-1).

Taylor Degnan had 17 kills and 20 digs and Abby Wright had 33 assists, 25 digs, and three blocks in the loss for Atascadero (1-1).

Paso Robles 3, Orcutt Academy 0

Paso Robles’ Gabby Morrison had 25 assists, four kills and seven digs in a win over Orcutt Academy on Tuesday night in Orcutt.

Madison Mitchell and Kayln Armstong also added eight kills in the 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 win.

The Bearcats (2-0) are on the road again on Thursday against Santa Maria.

SLO, 3 Cabrillo 0

San Luis Obispo got its second win of the season with a sweep over Cabrillo.

Sofie Janette had 25 assists and Dasha Novotny had 10 kills in the 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 win.

San Luis Obispo (2-0) hosts Santa Ynez on Thursday.

GIRLS GOLF

Arroyo Grande’s McBryde medals in dual meet

Medalist Kinsey McBryde led the Arroyo Grande girls golf team with a 3-over 38 in a dual meet against Atascadero, Cabrillo and Morro Bay at Atascadero’s Chalk Mountain Golf Course on Tuesday. Teammate Delanie Dunkle shot a 39.

Atascadero was led by Tess Lewdhn’s 48 and Christina Rogers’ 53. Morro Bay’s Claire Nordhus had a low of 64, and Yardley Hendry added a 68.

Arroyo Grande won the team score with a low of 240, followed by Atascadero with 248, Cabrillo with 278 and Morro Bay with 329.

Santa Ynez 283, San Luis Obispo 287

The Tigers were paced by medalist Isabelle Carpenter’s 44 on the par-36 Alisal River Course but ultimately came up short. San Luis Obispo plays Wednesday at San Marcos and again on Thursday at Orcutt.

GIRLS TENNIS

Mission Prep 14, Coast Union 4

Julia Wagner swept all three sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, Grace Cegelski won 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 and Avery Munster won 7-5, 6-1, 6-0 to lead the Royals (1-1).

The doubles team of Maggie Ma and Izzy Marshall also swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

The doubles team of Annie Corbet and Alyssa Drew won a pair of sets 6-1, 7-6, and teammates Lindy Ortiz and Savannah Lyon won two more, 6-3, 6-3 for Coast Union (0-2).

The two teams will meet again Thursday at Mission Prep.

Arroyo Grande 10, Santa Ynez 8

The Eagles were led by Lily Bickmore and Christina Atherton, who won 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in Arroyo Grande’s season opener. Emma Mostajo and Natalie Porter dropped a set 5-7, before winning 6-4, 7-5, and Jocelyn Ramirez took two out of three, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Arroyo Grande plays Locklin of Sacramento on Thursday.

Orcutt Academy 11, Paso Robles 7

The Bearcats’ doubles team of Rosie Singleton and Becca Slason won two out of three in the season opener for Paso Robles, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, and Siena Berry took a set 6-0 in singles play.

BOYS WATER POLO

Santa Ynez 14, San Luis Obispo 11

Mark Olson had a team-high five goals, and Shey Dorji and Jacob Donath added two goals apiece for the Tigers in a non-league match. Goalie Jordan Troy recorded nine saves for San Luis Obispo (0-1), who play host to Morro Bay on Thursday.

Atascadero 23, Morro Bay 2

Atascadero opened its 2016 campaign Tuesday in dominating fashion over Morro Bay.

Kyler Warren led the way for the Greyhounds (1-0) with five goals, and Alex Grant added four. Spencer Vega and Owen Post each posted three tallies. In all, eight different players scored goals for Atascadero.

Oliver Putnam scored both goals for Morro Bay (0-1), which was victimized by an Atascadero counter attack that produced 18 goals.

Atascadero plays again next Tuesday at home against Santa Ynez. Morro Bay next plays at San Luis Obispo next Thursday.
