Six SLO County players named to all-section baseball, softball and boys volleyball teams
Six San Luis Obispo County athletes were named to the All-CIF-Southern Section teams in three sports, the section announced Monday in a news release.
Paso Robles catcher Mark Armstrong and San Luis Obispo High pitcher Jeremy Jess were each named to the Division 3 team in baseball.
Jess, The Tribune County Player of the Year, led the PAC 8 in home runs with five and was tied for the league lead with Armstrong with 31 RBI. He also had a 1.26 ERA and 61 strikeouts on the mound. Armstrong, a first-team All-County player, hit .434 this year, good for second in the PAC 8, to lead the Bearcats. He also led the PAC 8 in on-base percentage.
Two softball players also made the all-section team. Templeton’s Ashley Daugherty, The Tribune’s County Player of the Year, led the CIF-Southern Section in strikeouts with 293, as well as leading the Los Padres League in wins (15) and ERA (0.44) and was named to the Division 5 team.
Ellie Magnuson of Coast Union, a first-team all-county standout, made the Division 7 team after a season in which she threw five no-hitters — the most in the Southern Section — and one perfect game. She led the Coast Valley League with a 0.00 ERA in league play and 96 strikeouts.
In boys volleyball, Arroyo Grande’s Ryan Meffert and San Luis Obispo’s John Duffy each made the Division 3 team. Meffert, an outside hitter, helped lead the Eagles to a 12-0 league record and a PAC 8 title, while Duffy, also an outside hitter, helped the Tigers to a 10-2 record and second place in the PAC 8.
