Nipomo High School swim team sets three school records at CIF sectionals

The Nipomo High School swim team set three school records during competition at the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 individual championships on Thursday at Riverside Community College.

The boys team finished fourth overall, and set three individual school marks, boys head coach Cody King said. Austin Simpson was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.66 seconds, the 400 relay team (Gerrit Vander Veen, Wyatt Marsalek, Peyton Kiunke and Simpson) was seventh in 3 minutes, 18.21 seconds, and the boys 200 medley relay (Tyler Melsheimer, Simpson, Marsalk and Kiunke) was 11th in 1:41.12.

In addition, Marsalek set another school record in the prelims of the 500 free Wednesday (4:35.27) and then won the event in 4:37.55 on Thursday.

Another Titan swimmer picked up a win Thursday when Alayna Gocke won the girls 500 free in 5:01.21.

She was also fifth in the 200 free in 1:54.79.

There were plenty of top-10 finishes for the boys team. Kiunke was fourth in the 50 free in 22.12 seconds, Simpson was fifth in the 200 IM in 1:57.15, Marsalek was sixth in the 200 free in 1:45.66, and Kiunke was ninth in the 100 free in 49.09.

Melsheimer was 17th in the 100 fly in 54.42.

King said the swimmers find out Sunday at 3 p.m. which individuals will move on to the state meet May 20-21 in Fresno.
